Meet the Maker

How I got here

I’ve loved art from a young age, studying fine art and sculpture at university, gave me a strong foundation in form and materials. After some time away from the arts during life changes, I found my way back to clay, a medium that perfectly combines my love of hands on making with a focus on design and function.

I like to describe my work as perfectly imperfect. I’m drawn to tactile, organic forms that feel like they carry a story, pieces that show someone’s time, care, and attention poured into them.

I’ve focused on creating a collection where hand shaped and wheel-thrown pieces sit comfortably together, offering variety without losing cohesion.

My garden studio

Rachel Kay Ceramics pottery studio at the end of her garden

I work from my small studio at the bottom of my garden, carving out time between teaching pottery part time at a local primary school. When I’m not teaching you’ll usually find me in the studio slowly building up new work.

I’m not a fast maker. My work embraces slow craft, taking time to make pieces thoughtfully and with care, rather than rushing to produce more. Each batch is small and considered.

I don’t currently have an online shop or hold a lot of stock but if you see something you like and its not available I’m happy to make it to order. Turnaround is usually around 4 weeks, just get in touch via my contact page.

Below are images of work in progress and at different stages of drying and firing.
